Overview of MR-Guided Ultrasound Ablation of the Prostate

In collaboration with Graham Sommer, MD and Chris Diederich, PhD, we developed and tested MR-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation of the prostate. The Diederich lab at UCSF maked the prototype catheter-like devices which have several ultrasound transducers along them. They were designed to deliver ultrasound energy from within the urethra, heating it to a lethal temperature. We developed temperature monitoring sequences for this application. PRF thermometry works well in the absence of motion of the gland. An example set of images are shown. The max temperature of 52C and thermal dose of 240 minutes correspond well to the area lacking contrast enhancement and lacking red stain on the TTC picture. Histology demonstrated a central area of "heat fixed" tissue, surrounded by coagulative necrosis.
